I came across this article today while reading Today’s website, and was not shocked. Back when I was a manager and had to sort through stacks of résumés, I tried to look for content. What caught my eye was design factors, you know, stark white paper or a good color. Spelling, etc. Then, I looked at skills. I was pretty good at finding the right creative type for the job.
This worked well for most industries, then the flood of applicants. The industries, said “if a computer can crunch numbers, let’s let it do this too.” Well, they actually didn’t do it, but, computers don’t take soft factors into it’s analysis. Soft factors that are very hard to put into numbers. Now come the very fun part. We don’t write résumés anymore. Read the article below, you will be astonded. Just like you need SEO, Search Engine Optimization for websites, you need the same for your résumé. Find the posting for the job and write somethoing that hits all the keywords.
I bet you could write a résumé that will make the screening computer put you to the top of the list, only you probably couldn’t do the job they really want. Nor, would I want that job.
Then there is that old adage, that it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Networking gets jobs.
